Canchias – Honduras

Build a 120’ vehicle bridge over the Yure River to access what has become known as “The Promised Land”, an agricultural and dairy land.
This land is only currently accessible by a footbridge. It is unstable for the farmers who have to carry heavy loads and dangerous for children carrying the free dairy products back to their schools.
This bridge will allow more schools in the area to receive free milk. In addition, farmers will be able to increase crop production, purchase vehicles to transport crops to market and thereby raise the region’s nutritional levels and economic stability for generations to come.
Candelaria – Honduras

Creation of a landfill to effectively manage un-recyclable municipal waste materials which caused decay that produced odors, damaged the surrounding natural environment, including the groundwater and river, and attracted vultures.
The design creates an “above grade” landfill comprised of a number of “cells” that can hold a year’s worth of materials. Each cell will be covered annually before the rainy season so that runoff will not impact the nearby river. The site has capacity for at least 20-years of landfill storage, giving the community time to identify additional future properties.
The community also discussed with EWB ways to develop a utility shed to support operations at the landfill site, and possible plans for a revenue-generating plant nursery and composting business at the site were also considered.
Las Cruces – Guatemala

Las Cruces is a town of 17,000 people located in a largely deforested former jungle region of Petén in northern Guatemala.
EWB-USA Chicagoland Professional Chapter is designing a storm water diversion channel for the town to mitigate flooding.
Severe flooding occurred in 2005, 2008, and 2010. In 2008 flood waters reached a depth of 10 feet, inundating homes and destroying belongings. More than 7000 people were displaced and all of the 17,000 inhabitants of the town were directly affected through the destruction of property and contamination of water sources.
Flood waters also disrupted the raising of chickens and pigs and the tending of gardens at home, which are an important source of income and nutrition for the impoverished townspeople. Flooding in Las Cruces has regional economic implications, disrupting the movement of goods and labor, and affecting vulnerable populations beyond the town of Las Cruces.
More than 40,000 people in the region were economically affected by the 2008 flood.
