Water Supply for Napenkara, Burkina Faso.
Logistics:
- Project Type: Water Supply
- Project Phase: Pre-Assessment
- Adoption Date: January 2012
- Directly Affects about 1,000 people. Indirectly affects 4,000.
- Funds needed: $26,000.
The Need
The village of Napenkara in Burkina Faso has no existing wells and no access to a consistent and clean supply of water. Villagers, including school-age children, have to walk 5 to 8km to the nearest well or river source. In the rainy season, villagers often dig open pits to capture rainwater and utilize this water untreated. As a result villagers often suffer from dehydration and many water-bourne diseases.
The Scope
Chicagoland professional chapter is investigating the feasibility of installing two borehole wells in the village. Preliminary information indicates that 50 to 80m deep borehole well could yield a worthwhile supply of water which could greatly enhance the quality of life for Napenkara villagers. We need to find more detailed local information on the groundwater and obtain more quotes from qualified in-country boring contractors. We also need to help the village set up a Water Board to control and maintain the wells over the long-term, and determine what if any water treatment will be needed.
