El Estor, Guatemala
Project Scope:
When the local village’s bridge collapsed, for 300 residents crossing the stream that ran through their community became an ongoing danger and impediment to life as they knew it. EWB-CPC, in partnership with the community, designed and implemented a Pedestrian Cable Bridge, starting assessment 2007 and finishing construction in 2009. 260,000 lb of rock and stone were gathered, hoisted, and positioned into place by the construction team. 200 bags of cement were carried by local villagers over 5 miles of steep terrain. When it was all said and done, the bridge was constructed in 10 days (5 days ahead of schedule) by 17 US volunteers and 25 indigenous villagers.
