ndolwa, tanzania
Engineers Without Borders Chicago has partnered with the NGO Empower Tanzania to develop a vital water and sanitation project in Ndolwa, located in the Vudee Ward, a rural mountainous region of Tanzania. This collaboration is aimed at improving access to clean water and sanitation services for the community. Two of our chapter members, Will and Hannah, traveled to Tanzania to meet with Empower Tanzania and assess potential project sites. This marks the beginning of a new and impactful partnership for our chapter in Africa.
Current progress
The project team is currently working closely with the Regional Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (RUWASA) engineers and Empower Tanzania on an Alternative Analysis report. This analysis is essential for determining the most effective and sustainable water solutions for the community.
Project Scope
Water Project in Ndolwa, Tanzania (as outlined by RUWASA):
Rehabilitation of the existing intake system
Construction of a protective fence at the intake
Replacement of the gravity main pipes
Construction of one large and two smaller storage tanks
Installation of new distribution lines
Construction of domestic service points for the community
Santitation Project
Construction of new latrine blocks at either a local dispensary or secondary school
Evaluation and improvement of the waste management system
Installation of fresh water systems for flushing, hand washing, and other hygiene needs in the latrines
next steps
Continued coordination with RUWASA and the local engineering team, primarily through asynchronous communication due to the time difference (8 hours ahead).
Finalizing the Alternative Analysis report to confirm the best solution for the community’s water supply.
